My Students

I work in a large school with a wonderfully diverse population in Western North Carolina. Many of my students come from a low-income/high poverty environment. The 746+ students at my school love music and have a strong desire to learn how to play an instrument. They inspire me with their motivation. Many of these students have never been exposed to the world of music. My students are inspired and are eager to learn. Music teaches perseverance, teamwork, responsibility, and creativity. Research shows that playing an instrument also strengthens students academically, and spiritually throughout their life.

My Project

Help me inspire some truly inspiration children! My students LOVE music. Yesterday was our last day of school and some of my students left the music classroom in tears as they would not have music again until August. This was my first year at this very diverse socioeconomic school. Due to limited funding, we spent the year, singing, moving and learning the many components of music notation. My students are ready to build their knowledge and transfer what they know now to instruments. For that reason, I am trying to get a set of 10 ukuleles for my class. Although some of my classes have as many as 27 students in them, by working in centers and/or with partners I will have enough ukuleles to begin a string program in my high needs elementary school. A sincere thanks for considering to help bring the joy of music to the children of Western North Carolina.
