As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are an amazing, vibrant group of students who are ready to learn and who deserve the very best.
We are a high-performing, Title I elementary school in Nevada.
Many of my students come to kindergarten without prior access to preschool. Our ultimate goal is to have our students reading, writing, adding, and subtracting by the time they leave kindergarten. We accomplish this through various hands-on activities that are engaging, interactive, and fun.
My Project
My students come to school excited to learn and are crazy about science! They love insects and bugs and adore our hands on units we do with butterflies, isopods, and worms. Not only do I want to create more hands-on units for science by using the Dual Microscope, Prepared Slides, and Real Bug Discovery Kit, I also want to extend the learning of insects into our literacy and math centers. My students will be able to use the requested books during literacy centers. The Magnetic Size Sorting Rods, and Sequencing Number Puzzles are perfect for bringing bugs into our math centers. The Don't Let the Bugs Fall Game and Scoop-A-Bug Sorting Kit are ideal for helping kindergarteners with their fine motor skills.
If we as educators get students in younger grades excited about science it will also increase their desire to come to school and learn all that they can.
Because students are fascinated with they everyday world we can use that to foster language and literacy development. Students will be excited to discover many new things about insects in the world they live in. Showing students the new and exciting world of science will increase their desire to read more and find out about the world around them.
