Help me give my students human rights books to help provide insight on human rights violations as they do literature circles.

My Students

My students live in a smaller town and, as such, lack some of the learning experiences that students from larger cities enjoy.

In general, they are well behaved and respectful and, for the most part, have a positive outlook on life and their futures.

Our school's climate is improving, with a heavier emphasis on collaboration among teachers and remediation for students who are struggling.

Our motto is, "Preparing students today for the challenges of tomorrow." We are implementing a more hands-on approach that will do just that; help our students be better prepared to face the real world after they graduate.

We want to expose students, through literature, to historical events that will show them oft-forgotten human rights violations in US History.

In addition to exposing them to interesting historical events, it will help develop teamwork and communication skills and allow students to learn from each other by sharing their analysis and insights from what they read in their books as well as drawing on prior knowledge to apply to the books to understand them even better.

My Project

This project will help small-town students better understand human rights violations that have happened to different racial groups throughout U.S. History. I will include literature that will cover Native American boarding schools (Undefeated) as well as Hispanic Civil Rights and Japanese Internment Camps (Sylvia and Aki).

Most students haven't heard or read about these pivotal human rights events and when they do, many are fascinated but at the same time disgusted that such a thing could happen in a country supposedly built on freedom for all.

I sincerely look forward to seeing how students react to reading historical fiction and non-fiction that will put them on the front lines of these oft-forgotten human rights violations in our country's history.
