The earth is fascinating to study, but we cannot see its internal structure. Scientists often study this indirectly and come up with a model of the earth's interior. Using these globes will give the students a good visual understanding of what is below them and some important geologic concepts.
I teach sixth and seventh grade science in a high-need, high-poverty rural school district.
Many of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Florida has just changed its standards for science to the Next Generation Sunshine Standards. Now, earth's interior, plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes are to be taught at the seventh grade level. Students will be tested on these concepts on the Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test.
My Project
My students really enjoy hands-on learning activities. Many have told me they learn more by doing labs and other hands-on activities. These globes will allow the students to study the landmass relief of the earth's surface, but then let them "open up" the mysteries of what is inside the earth. Studying the earth's interior cannot be taught effectively by just studying from a book or photos. These globes will give the students a good understanding of why earthquakes and volcanoes occur. It will show them that the earth is made of layers and that the crust is made of large pieces like a giant jigsaw puzzle and the pieces slowly move.
There have been many serious earthquakes and volcanoes in the past few years.
The students need to realize that the earth is a very active planet and natural processes can occur that can have serious effects on humans. Your help and support for this proposal will enable my students to study the depths of the earth in a whole new light. My students really appreciate when people like you support their science class and their education. As a teacher, this really encourages me.
