I am teaching in a brand new Intensive Learning Support class for 5 to 8-year-old students. My students have a variety of disabilities but they are all full of enthusiasm and excitement for learning! Life Science is one area that peaks their interest and helps them connect to the present.
Curious, enthusiastic, and creative; my students are eager to immerse themselves in any kind of challenge.
Bringing the real world into their classroom will allow us to harness that enthusiasm and curiosity for learning.
My Project
My students are always excited to learn about living things. My special needs students learn best with hands on, real life activities. We will use the Butterfly Demo Kit and the Giant Ant Farm Kit to bring real living insects into the classroom.
The students will be able to observe ants and butterflies as they grow and change.
They will also learn the importance of taking care of a living thing.
When we read the books, the students will learn the importance of insects in our environment. The insect specimens and the books will help to reinforce what we have learned about the life cycle of insects. The insect specimens will allow the students to get a close up look at other insects.
The students will enjoy manipulating the Ant Life Cycle Stages Model Set and the Magnetic Butterfly Life Cycle. Hands on activities help to reinforce learning. This project will help us make insects "come alive" in the classroom.
