I work with a wide-spectrum of students who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ranging from grades kindergarten-second grade. This is a full day Specialized Program containing 6 students in kindergarten and first grade. This program is at a brand new school in the Henderson, NV area.
Autism is a developmental disorder of brain function characterized by three major types of symptoms: impaired social interactions, problems with verbal and nonverbal communication and unusual or severely limited activities and interests.
My students do best in an environment that is structured and routine based. They are amazing little learners. To see the world through their eyes is such a special thing.
My Project
Receiving an iPad for my classroom would be extremely beneficial for my students in many ways. My students have a very difficult time learning new skills and therefore require constant repetition and motivation. There are thousands of apps specifically for students with autism and education. The apps will be used for communication, literacy development, vocabulary learning, science, math, reinforcement and motivation. My students love technology but have very limited access to technology within the classroom. Having access to another iPad in the classroom would allow my students to expand their knowledge and use of technology while applying these skills to academic tasks, functional communication, social interactions, and motor development.
