"Tell me, I'll forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn" Benjamin Franklin said once, and he must have based that on curious and inquisitive first grade students. Supporting curious young learners is my top priority in building a hands on, inquiry based classroom.
I teach 17 first grade advanced placement and gifted students at a beautiful International Baccalaureate elementary school.
These students are unique, inquisitive, curious, and love school. They ask questions all the time on a variety of topics especially in the subject areas of social studies and science. This group of students really enjoy independent and small group activities that they lovingly call "center time". Every weekend I am work very hard to create learning experiences to satisfy their never ending thirst for knowledge and exploration. I've never seen quite a group of interested and curious students. I love to see their faces light up when they are engaged and focused on a new learning center in our classroom. They absorb new information easily on a daily basis. Now is the time to keep the momentum for learning and inquiring growing for my first grade classroom.
My Project
The resources I am asking for are perfect for my students. The resources include a collection of kits that cover mapping skills, Native Americans, festivals, and American history. The kits are wonderful for curious students because they have realistic props for tactile learning as well as Common Core reading/writing activities. They are engaging and interesting for first graders. The science kits are created for small group investigations that are already designed for inquisitive first grade students. All of the resources are wonderful supplements to our very limited curriculum resources in the areas of primary science and social studies. The kits are colorful, fun, and appropriate resources to stimulate a greater love of learning for my first grade class.
Our class would really appreciate this project because due to so many severe budget cuts we NEED primary Science and Social Studies resources for our young learners.
My first grade class craves knowledge and soars with activities that are hands on and allow them to explore their world every day. I know how thrilled they would be to see these brand new learning centers arrive in our classroom. Working together or independently they need these resources to keep their curiosity satisfied.
