Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, creative, and kind. They love to learn and teach others, and they enjoy reading and writing about books. They are expert researchers, computer coders, scientists, and mathematicians. They are professional kickball and dodge ball players, debaters, artists, and performers. Our school is in East Oakland and serves a socioeconomically disadvantaged student population. The majority of the students are English language learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school is making great strides to help our students and put their learning first.
My Project
In fifth grade, students write informational reports that require cross-text synthesis and collection of information from a myriad of sources. Each year, students study a variety of topics. This year, students will be adding a layer to their social studies inquiry by researching a North American Native America Tribe. This way, students will have a wrap around unit in social studies, reading, and writing.
Thematic units help kids learn best--so these books will accelerate both language and literacy learning in our class.
Students will work in teams to research a Indigenous nations in different regions of the country. They will study their culture and customs, and also how the environment affects their way of life. Along with articles and a language-rich social studies unit, student will learn all about the Native Americans of North America!
