Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. We have claimed our community as ours. We are in an inner city and need support to fulfill our curriculum.
I teach at a school in Connecticut where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
The five I’s are what my students want and need to represent to fulfill a positive attitude towards their 21st growth mindset. Imagination, Inquiry, Invention, Implementation, and Initiative are the big ideas of my fifth grade classroom. We take these words and support our daily curriculum through hands on and interactive learning.
Inventions School Science Pack and the Energy School Science Pack will bring innovation and hands on inquiry to my fifth graders.
Students’ will be using these kits as a starting place for their inquiry based classroom and school to home connection projects. Implementation should be linked to some of the inventing students do we do on a daily basis. The innovation challenge for my students has been intriguing for most as they have never learned through this process. It’s pretty clear that teaching nine and ten years olds to focus on the right answer has the unintended consequence of reducing their tendency to inquire broadly and curiously about things. Research and exploration are essential innovative behaviors.
How can we integrate students and parents into this process?
Once a month on Thursdays, I will be inviting a group of parents to explore science with their children in the classroom. Students will be able to show their parents the STEAM engineering model. This will be essential for our connection for home and school. This will be the excitement for our students to engage and create just what is needed for the process. Once I begin this project of “Fifth Grade is Alive” I would love to share it for the future students. I want to make this a school wide thought process. Students will be able to present their projects to other classes in our building as well as in our district. The connection will become something huge!
