My students are incredibly bright, fun and energetic students who are excited about the transformation that I am on the verge of creating. They love to create, design, engineer, think, and dream of new and exciting possibilities! I help, encourage and inspire 457 students who range in age from 5 to 10 and are in grades preschool through fourth grade in a suburban elementary school. They need more opportunities to unleash their creativity and utilize the tools they will need for their future education and careers.
My Project
Our library is in the process of re-inventing itself into an engaging, creative, inviting and imaginative place for our students. We are building Makerspace centers for our students to design, engineer, create and innovate their ideas. We are also creating fun reading areas and quiet corners with comfy furniture.
The new furniture will be used to complete our Makerspace centers and provide work stations for them to complete their projects as well as give our students comfortable places to enjoy their favorite books!
Right now, we have no furniture in our Makerspace area and the students are sitting on the floor. I have requested two table sets with chairs for them to use as a work area. The storage bins are to provide an organized way of keeping the materials they need such as tape, cardboard pieces, wood pieces, and various papers, etc. in an organized manner so they can see what they need on the task card and readily find it for use. It also provides an easy way to clean up as everything will have its place! The reading bench, bean bags, chair and ottoman set will create designated "cozy corners" so students can have a fun, inviting places to curl up and read.
Even though our district consists of mainly middle-class families, we struggle with financing any "extras" as our state drastically cut funding to special areas. Because of our
socio-economic status, we do not qualify for grants. However, we do not get the necessary funding either and we need just as much help as an inner city school does!
These items will enable our students to make great use of our new areas and awaken the creator in all of them.
