Innovation in Seating to Inspire Innovative Students.
My students need options when they are in the classroom that allow them to be comfortable such as chairs that swivel and roll for those students who need to move and to facilitate collaboration.
My school is located in an impoverished suburban area where jobs are scarce and education has not always been emphasized. We are redefining our school with numerous innovations because we believe our students have a lot to offer to our community and society in general. Our school has had a lot of teacher turnover in the past, students are transient due to economic difficulties and often lack prerequisite skills for the classes they are enrolled. My students often come to my class with misconceptions about mathematics and a lack of confidence in their skills. However, I have found that making students comfortable, building relationships and building their confidence are the building blocks needed to overcome these obstacles.
My students are wonderful young adults with a thirst to learn and a desire to stop the cycle of poverty in their family and community.
They are creative and have the potential to really thrive given the environment and support needed to do so.
My Project
Our school is shifting to a design mindset and a part of this change is to change the way our classrooms are arranged. Students first have to feel comfortable in the space where they are learning before they can be inspired to think of innovative solutions to real world problems.
Students in straight rows and only traditional student desks who learn only in a traditional teacher led environment will find their creativity stifled.
The four bean bag chairs, four benches, four butterfly saucer chairs and mesh office chairs that move will encourage my students to think outside the box. Top corporations that are leading innovation often have offices that are similar to the arrangement I hope to have for my students.
