Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a middle school Special Education teacher. I service students who are classified as emotionally disturbed and academically delayed. Our school recently received laptops for each classroom. But these laptops are 8 years old and their RAM needs an upgrade in order for them to function.
The children I encounter on a day to day basis are faced with insurmountable obstacles.
On top of their Special Education classification, some live in shelters, others have parents incarcerated, siblings in gangs, etc. Often they come to school stressed and frustrated by their environment. Since their lives are so unpredictable and chaotic I would like to create a calm learning environment. A place where they know what to expect, and where to find the materials they need.
My Project
I am requesting 14 RAM cartridges in order to install and upgrade the current operating system. To run current software and educational websites, like Brain Pop videos, READ 180 and Achieve3000, in order to run these web base program smoothly. The laptops were a great gift but we can not use it without this necessary piece of the puzzle. Technology has proved to be a great asset in the classroom, and I would love to take full advantage of it. Students who use technology in their classes have better attendance rates and lower dropout rates than their peers who don't use technology in school, according to the U.S. Department of Education. Technology challenges students to perform better, engages them in the topic being taught, and enables them to work more independently. Being a teacher of special needs students it is beneficial for the computer to run as fast as they can. Most of my students lose focus very quickly and when the computer runs programs slowly they lose focus.

These computers are in desperate need of an up date in order to get them functional. Please support my proposal. For a couple of hundred dollars I would have a CLASS SET of working laptops. Every little bit helps!
