Third grade is a big transitional year. Students begin to see themselves as independent learners. They further develop self-identities socially, emotionally and academically. I want to guide my students carefully through these changes, by offering them space, comfort, and flexibility in how they learn.
Third graders are enthusiastic, energetic, and excited about learning!
I am in the process of moving into a new classroom, where students will need space to move around in, as well as a variety of options/supports for their workspaces. They will greatly benefit from more choice and various supportive structures.
My Project
This year marks my fifteenth year as a teacher. When I began, much of my classroom equipment was given to me, used; I still have many of those furnishings, today! It is my sincere hope, in the near future, I can replace the dated, oversized, and broken furniture with items that will truly fit the needs of my students! I would also like to provide more opportunities for project-based-learning.
In the past fifteen years, I have developed a more flexible mindset about what sort of seating and engineering needs my third graders would benefit from.
I have spent oodles of hours shopping carefully with the small supply budget we are given each year. I obsessively look at sales and try to stretch every dollar allotted to our class. I scope out yard sales, Facebook sales, and reach out to family and friends for a variety of items. I am proud of the eclectic collection of furnishings and equipment I have acquired. However, I have also learned that eight- and nine-year-olds are capable of identifying their own wants and needs--and should be given the opportunity to explore options. The simple truth is, when kids are physically comfortable they are more cognitively engaged. They are also empowered, independent, and content!
With your help, I would very much like to provide the type of seating options which can best meet the needs of my students. I would like stools and yoga chairs which wobble, because they allow for a range of movement that young learners need. I hope for some meditation cushions, for students who prefer to sit low to the ground. Some students prefer 'regular' chairs, which need to be updated! I am also hoping for a vinyl cutter, to help my learners participate in more project-based learning activities!
