Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A.A.S. is a small, ancient brick building in the north ward of Newark, NJ which houses the most dynamic, dedicated and caring students and staff in the city of Newark!
The building may be old, but the creativity and enthusiasm of the students and staff outshine even the newest, most sparkly school buildings in Newark!
What you can't see from the outside is the love, the creativity and the joy that the staff and students alike bring to our school. The brick and mortar around us encases a family of loving individuals who celebrate all of the intelligences, including the arts!
I hope to be able to, through our drama club, harness that creativity and turn it into a full blown musical production. Our first goal is to celebrate the Harlem Renaissance during Black History Month. A proper sound system with body microphones and proper stage lighting would be an amazing asset to our drama club!
We put the "A" in STEAM!
My Project
Try to imagine a group of middle school students in Newark, New Jersey who have shed their egos, attitudes and awkwardness in exchange for a chance to perform in the theater!
It's true, and it's happening right here at A.A.S.
in Newark, New Jersey.
It has been my experience that drama club is perhaps the most inclusive of the extra curricular activities. Everyone fits in in the theater, regardless of academic ability, size, color or sexual orientation. Only the desire to express oneself is necessary.
Participation in dramatic productions is both educational and enjoyable. Drama can play a great part in promoting a child’s self esteem. By encouraging students to co-operate rather than compete, they develop collaborative skills and practices as well as a personal sense of accomplishment.
Studies have shown that participating in dramatic exercises increases a child’s self esteem which is particularly crucial during adolescence, hence focusing on the middle school students. Help my amazingly talented students put on a production which would rival Broadway!
