Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an All Girls Public School in Fort Worth, Texas. This is one of the best places in the world to teach. Many of our teachers recognize that we are providing for our students the educational environment we were denied. Last year, on the strength of the relationships I build with my students, I was one of five finalists for FWISD's Secondary District Teacher of Year.
Some of my students come in as young as 11 and already believe they can't do art.
Others come in with skills beyond their years. I get to teach them all and help them gain skills that will increase their confidence as artists. We prepare students for a future we can't even imagine.
Like all teachers, I sometimes spend money on supplies that I need quickly and that will provide all my students with the same resources. Occasionally, students need to borrow supplies from the art room to complete projects in other courses. Sometimes, I have to say no when they want to borrow consumables because my budget is limited. However, I freely loan out items that can be reused when taken care of, such as brushes, protractors, compasses, hole punchers, etc,.
My Project
We teach children today what they need for the future. Yet, we have no idea what the future will look like. In art, I teach creativity and problem solving. In this assignment, students get to respond to prompts in ways that are as creative and individual as they are.
These supplies will provide my students equal access to all the same materials.
Currently, some students have the means to buy nicer pens or have tools at home that give them an advantage in creating an aesthetically pleasing project.
In the past, I am always impressed with the way my students solve the inking prompts I provide for them. I have also loaned them the nicer pens I have in the classroom. Sadly, the ink has mostly run out of these. The pens we are asking for would provide a non-toxic option for each student to use in class.
