Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students cover a full spectrum at our diverse campus. They vary in race, culture, socioeconomic status, and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students in grades 7th through 8th who are between the ages of 12 and 14.

Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minority with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.

About 25% of our students are currently English Language Learners. Our special education students make up 10% of the entire site.

My Project

Our students have been learning all about how our economy works. They have been following how Congress has been handling the Infrastructure Bill. Our students want to learn more about how our economy and politics are connected. To do this, I think my class needs to understand better how Congress works. I have included What Is Congress? to help students have a deeper understanding of how Congress works. I have also included books like The Little Book of Government, , Introduction to Government, and How It Works.

We also plan to have the teachers dress up as "speaker of the house" and the "President pro tempore" to have the students pretend to vote on the Infrastructure Bill; they will debate how it will change the economy.

We plan to make sweatshirts one for each party so the kids can wear them to help explain the two-party system. To help the students prep for this debate, we have books like Political Science for Kids and The Kids' Complete Guide to Elections. Then depending on if it passes, our class will vote on a "President" to sign it. To help our student president better understand their responsibilities, we have included books like The Presidents Visual Encyclopedia and What Does the US President Do. We plan on also looking at how Infrastructure affects the economy in the United States. For this, we have included books like All About Money. I have also included "infrastructure" projects that my students can build Discovering STEM Structures Constructions & Bridges. Our final project will be creating posters and a bulletin board to display what they have learned. We will use the Sharpies ,Gel Pens ,bulletin board paper and borders. Would you please help our class bring this fun project to life and learn about the economy?
