My 8th grade students are some of the best and brightest that Baltimore City has to offer! They are motivated to learn and grow and be prepared for high school and all life has to offer. I teach in a school where many families have resources, but in city and district where inequity runs rampant. My students all have incredible skills and talents, but come from many different backgrounds and family situations. My goals are to meet them where they are and give them the tools they need to be successful.
In our history class we learn from the past and discuss how issues and conflicts in our current community and country can be traced to historical events.
It is not always easy to get 8th graders engaged in history, but I believe that the study of the influences and problems of the past can help us create students engaged in making a better future.
My Project
Frequent bi-weekly exposure to news and current events from around the world will help us with classroom discussion and analytical skills in social studies.
In our ever-changing world, it is more important than ever to create informed students who can think and read critically about current events.
This magazine subscription will provide common text and topics for students across our middle school. In this fast-moving work of instant news, it is difficult for all of us, especially teenagers, to not fall victim to "click bait" and twitter headlines. Regular exposure to scholarly articles will help our students be better prepared for the world and to enter into it as informed citizens.
