Informational Texts Needed for English Language Learners
My students need high-quality informational texts to meet the Common Core standards including "Amelia to Zora", "Nelson Mandela", and "So you want to be President?"
Inquisitive, creative, and persistent are just a few words to describe my students. Everyday my students amaze me with their desire to learn. They bound through the door and ask, "Ms. Treb did you get any books about World War II or how about the Holocaust? Can you tell me about Ruby Bridges?"
As an EL teacher, all of my students are English language learners.
They come from a variety of countries including Mexico, Somalia, China, Vietnam, Laos, Honduras, Korea, India, and El Salvador. They range in English language proficiency and age (K-5). They are excited about learning and love the opportunity to open a new book. Because many of my students do not have access to high quality informational texts at home, I allow students to check out books from our classroom library. So many of my students take advantage of these extra books, that they even started asking for homework while they read! Now we have a book club where students can take home an informational text packet, read the book, and practice comprehension and writing!
My Project
With these books students will have a wide variety of informational text options to read during class and at home. In addition these books were carefully selected to align with district curriculum and the new Common Core standards. Therefore, I can ensure that students are meeting the rigorous text complexity expectations when reading a book at home. Not only will these books be part of the classroom library, but they will also be part of my daily instruction. Often we use informational texts to increase academic language. My students learn how to compare and contrast, describe, explain, analyze and synthesize using informational texts. High-quality informational texts are essential to teach these skills.
By donating to this project you will help enrich the lives of over 72 English language learners and their families this year!
With these books students will critically read, think, and discuss each topic at home and during class. Not only will students learn specific English skills with me, but by engaging in this type of reading students will be more prepared to participate in classroom activities with their teacher. Thank you so much for your donation! We appreciate it!
