It is said that teachers today are preparing students for jobs that don't even exist yet - jobs that we can't even fathom. How do I prepare my students for a future I can't yet envision? I create an environment that will stimulate creativity and support life-long learning.
My 22 third graders are an amazing group of kids.
They are enthusiastic, inventive, kind, and creative! They already love to read and I want that to continue - forever! They have so many interests, hopes, and dreams. They inspire me to be the best teacher I can be. They come from different racial, ethnic, religious and linguistic backgrounds, and they have diverse learning styles.
My Project
Research says the number one way to make students better readers is to get them reading - as much as possible! Reading isn’t a luxury - it’s a necessity and reading ability doesn’t just translate to success in academics. It can also be the crucial factor that determines whether a child will succeed in life. Having books to read in our classroom library will support my students not just in becoming stronger readers, but stronger in other areas as well. Reading about science, history, and people who made important contributions to the world will inspire, motivate, and encourage my students to work hard, learn as much as they can, and strive to make a difference.
The new state standards emphasize informational texts equally with literary texts and demand that students in classes across the curriculum “determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text” as well as “summarize complex concepts." In order for my students to meet these expectations, they need exposure to a variety of texts - specifically informational texts.
Having these texts available would help ensure that.
