This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Among the many things I love about my students is their perseverance. They go through a lot of difficult circumstances (outside of school) yet they continue to come to school daily and still give it all they can give. Despite serious family and community issues they continue to achieve both academically and socially. For example, our school was a level 3 school (low rank), but as of last year, mainly due to students' academic growth, we are a level 1+(highest rank) school.
To continue this growth and maintain our level 1+ status, it is pertinent that student have some basic necessities.
My Project
These Non-Fiction reading books will allow my scholars a more interesting selection of books to choose. Historically, I have no problem with them choosing and enjoying Literature (fiction). They love it. Based on my current data, more reading and skills application are needed for Informational text. Skills lacking include main idea with supporting text evidence, author's purpose, author biases, mood/tone, and audience. As I teach these skills, it is pertinent to have the students experience and apply them to books that are relevant to the skills. I simply do not have enough Non-Fiction books to accommodate my goal of having them read a minimum of 5 Non-Fiction and 5 Fiction books this school year. Your support is appreciated.
