"Are you going to be a pioneer or a settler?" is a question that was asked by our new elementary principal who has since moved on to be our school superintendent. That comment was in response to being introduced to Project Based Learning. As a class, we are trying to not be settlers.
My third-grade students are motivated to learn new things by using technology and various manipulatives in and outside of the classroom.
Our school is a PreK-12 grade school in four buildings. The population is around 400 students. The student population at our school is not very diverse, but students of different ethnicities are gladly accepted and strong friendships are developed. One of our goals as a school is to empower our students to become problem solvers using creative and critical thinking 21st Century Skills.
My Project
Recess always seems to be on the top of most students' lists when it comes to what is best about school. During the winter months at our school in SD, when the temperature is below zero, students are kept inside to play. With a top priority being safety, students need indoor activities they can do in the midst of all who are inside in a single gym.
By donating to this project, you will be providing students with meaningful items to explore, 'work with' and build with as well as share kindness with others while taking a break from academic learning.
Winter recesses can be long if students need to stay inside too many times in a row. Imagine building with pipes, tiles and transforming number bots into play items with your friends. These new items would be beneficial to help occupy many youngsters minds and to work on the concepts of sharing with others.
