I work in a fourth grade classroom at a Title I elementary school. I work with a population that comes from a low socioeconomic background. Many of my students qualify for Title I or special education services. My students work hard to overcome personal, social, and academic challenges every day! They are resilient and capable young people who deserve to be supported.
My Project
Sometimes students need a few minutes in the morning to get ready for a day of learning. I've found that giving students some time to get mentally prepared helps them feel settled. Because of this, their attention and ability to learn throughout the day improves! Some of the activities that they can do during these slow mornings, what we call "soft starts", are board games, card games, hands-on toys like playdough, blocks, etc. However, these items get expensive to provide. That's why I am turning to Donors Choose.
Students will also use these "slow start" items and games for indoor recess on those frigid Montana winter days.
Providing enough materials for students to play and explore during indoor recesses cuts down on poor behaviors and builds social learning skills.
