Individualized Interventions to Create Strong Readers
My students need Beginning Sounds Phonics Train, Twist & Turn Word Builders, and Vowel Teams Instant Learning Center to build their decoding skills for reading fluency.
As an academic intervention specialist, I have the honor and pleasure to work with small groups of children who are at the highest risk in our urban school. My students range from Kindergarten - 3rd Grade. They come to me for 40 minutes of focused intentional learning at their individualized level.
My students are smart and capable children who come to us with a deficit in language due to circumstances beyond their control.
Our school is located in an urban district with 99% of our children qualifying for free and reduced-price lunches. We have a diverse community of children with a high population of English Language Learners. Our children come from great challenges but show a resilience for learning. As with many districts ours is suffering from budget cuts that limit our resources. Quality education is the key for our children to conquer generational poverty.
My Project
My students are eager to be readers! They each come with individual needs. The students that I serve are working far below grade-level in Kindergarten - 3rd Grade. They come to me to work in small groups on the deficits that are preventing them from being independent readers. We focus on phonological awareness, phonics skills, and decoding, as well as, fluency in text. My students are so able - they simply need more individualized instruction to reach their potential. With such a broad range of skills among the students it is so important that I have materials to provide the needed learning and practice to enable them to become readers. With diverse opportunities they will reach their potential!

Once children break the code of our difficult language they have the ability to become fluent readers & life long learners! I've watched as this unfolds and the confidence it brings to the children is just beautiful. It not only impacts academic growth but behavioral as well. Negative behaviors decrease in students who feel confident and are able to perform.
