Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My scholars are members of a public college prep school that serves the southeast Fort Worth area. My scholars are technological wizards and are always engaged when we find new ways to leverage technology in our learning. Despite their surroundings, my scholars exhibit the grit and motivation to grow as students and citizens. Every day, I am in awe of what I learn from my scholars. Although I am meant to teach them, I do most of the learning.
Due to this continuous learning, I am constantly reminded to believe in the power of young people.
With this belief in young people, I have transferred my English class into a technology-heavy class, utilizing the presentation software, Nearpod. The software allows scholars to authentically interact with texts and images, and provides low-risk opportunities to practice specific skills. However, many students don't have technology of their own and our school's Chromebooks are in dire condition. Scholars are growing up in a digital age and the deserve educators willing to move into the next frontier firmly by their side.
My Project
I am a teacher who believes to really prepare my students for college I need to adapt as many collegiate practices into my pedagogy. One of those practices is to record lessons to better individualize my instruction and provide my students who need more practice an accessible way to get it. This software will also allow me to record extension lessons to stretch students who have mastered concepts.
For example, as we begin reading our novels for next semester, "Go Tell It On A Mountain" and "Things Fall Apart", I can record myself reading and annotating sections to model for my students the metacognition needed to deeply read and analyze novels.
By recording the explicit instruction in an eye-catching video, we can use our time in class to have discussions that dig deeper into the literature.
