Our classroom of 22 students is full of energy, eagerness to learn, and hard workers. They have a joy and calmness when they enter school since over 60% of our population receives free and reduced lunch. My students this year are a unique group where they are high trauma students (homelessness, foster care, history of abuse, etc).
We want our students not to be victims of their lives but instead, survivors.
We do this by creating a safe, predicable and rigorous classroom that focuses on positive behavior support and goal setting.
My Project
As a 2nd grade teacher, we focus on cementing the learning for reading and basic math facts. The students are learning about spelling, addition, subtraction and showing their thinking processes.
They are also earning that mistakes are part of the learning process.
The easiest and most engaging way to encourage students to join this journey is the use of whiteboards. They can quickly record their thoughts and make edits with a quick fix.
We use whiteboards multiple times a day. This is my 6th year teaching, thus, my current whiteboards are falling apart. The corners have broken off, the wax on the boards aren't as fresh therefore it makes erasing difficult. I've even had students say, "Mrs. Lee, why can't we get new whiteboards? These ones are hard to learn with."
Well, we are hoping with your donations we can make new whiteboards possible! Students gravitate towards them even without teach direction because they find them that engaging and helpful to their learning! Together, I know we can make this happen. This isn't just a project for my current class but for my classroom for the next 5 years! That's about 150 students (or more!) it will reach.
