Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Each year I have five classrooms of between 5-15 amazing students. They are driven, compassionate, intelligent, kind, and show extremely high levels of perseverance. My students are also identified as having disabilities.
Respecting my students' diverse learning styles and finding ways for them to express their knowledge in various ways leads to levels of success that are paramount to developing strong, lifelong learners.
Once my students learn that they have the ability, they don't let anything get in their way.
My Project
I use a lot of different technology in class to not only engage diverse learners, but also to provide individual assessments, assignments, and accommodations. When projecting my desktop onto the screen, I often need to freeze the directions and place my computer or a second computer next to individual students who need more time on previous steps or are ready to expand and move on. Currently, I am using my personal tablet that I brought from home, however, it no longer has the software required to run the application. When it does run, it is slow or has significant delays causing my work computer glitches.
A tablet that can run the apps I use (SplashTop, Pear Deck, Join Me, TextFairy, etc) will allow me to spend more attention one-on-one with students who are not comprehending the material or need more time.
Diverse learners deserve a learning environment that can be flexible and fluid for each individual. My students will use the tablet by allowing me to have groups of students who need more structure or time to look at one slide and freezing the projector to a different slide for my kids who are ready to move on or extend their learning. Additionally, students can use the tablet for apps like TextFairy to transfer text in their general education classes to speech. This will allow for students with various disabilities to access the same grade-level content.
