Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a Title I K-8th community school. Students have become adept in working in the art studio as artists, deciding for themselves how to problem solve and create a work of art in their choice of media. They love to be innovative, explore, and take risks in their artmaking, preparing them for this 21st century.
I am so proud of these students and how eager they are to create a personally inspired original work of art.
No matter what materials may not be available to them, they simply problem solve and come up with the most unique and innovative solutions! The 7th and 8th grade student artists have a semester of open ended art activities in a variety of media. Their final semester is student choice and most choose painting. The brushes we have are old, cheap, and falling apart. I am so surprized how well they still can paint with these brushes but I would love to give them the opportunity to use better grade brushes and see the difference it makes in both creating and in the final product.
My Project
My 1st-8th grade art students all share the same paint brushes in our art studio class. The elementary students use tempera paints while my middle school students ususally choose acrylic. With so many different levels of artists and having them available for each class, these brushes go through a lot!
My middle school students have been asking if they can keep a set of their own brushes to be sure to keep them in top condition and have their favorite brushes for every class.
I have to decline their request because the other classes need them. The brushes are being cleaned multiple times throughout the day and are falling apart. As students move to 7th grade they have art every day and their skills progress rapidly. With this advancement they need better brushes for the fine detail in their work. These brushes need to be cleaned carefully and when I give students a special brush to keep they handle it with so much care! It would be a huge gift to these middle school artists to keep their own set for the semester.
