Our students come from all different backgrounds, environments and situations. They all have different abilities, successes and learning environments that make them successful. My students are in a self-contained special education classroom. Their disabilities range from developmentally delayed to autistic and everything in between.
Every child in my room needs different teaching methods, styles, or environments to learn successfully.
One thing that all of my students have in common is they love sensory items. Their sensory needs differ from child to child. Some like the soft, calming and quite sensory items. Others like to feel different textures and play with hard toys that make noise.
There are times that the environment of my classroom, the other students or noises in the building excite, scare and terrify my students. They like to hide under my desk, behind a bookshelf, under a table or anywhere they feel secure. Some students are on sensory-overload and like to crawl into a secured and enclosed area.
My Project
The resources of this project will be used in a few different aspects and by quite a few preschool students across 3 classrooms. The ink will be used to print colored pictures of themselves. Alot of our students don't recognize letters, their name or any words at all. However, we have had huge success in them recognizing their colored picture. The pictures will be used to label their cubbies, their line spot, their birthdays, their bathroom cubby, and their spot during whole group.
Our students need to feel safe and secure.
The weighted blanket will be used to help some of our children who suffer from anxiety and adhd. They sometimes need to help of a weighted object to calm their nerves and their bodies.
