Help me give my students a fresh look at Indigenous culture. In 4th grade we learn about the early Natives of California, and I believe reading books by Indigenous authors will benefit them greatly.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are amazing! They all come from different walks of life, but are happy to be a part of our blended classroom family! My students come from low-income, working class families. We live in a city where BIPOC communities have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic. My students are at high risk in many areas. Many of my students come from immigrant families that come here to work in agriculture. Many of my students do not have much access to the English language when they are at home.
Coming from a similar childhood, I strive to provide my students with the best learning experience and environment possible.
I encourage them to have a growth mindset and teach them to embrace their mistakes, with the understanding that they do not define them. I hope that after being in my class, my students know that, "While we may come from different places and speak in different tongues, our hearts beat as one.”
My Project
In 4th grade we are learning about Indigenous Californians. The book of choice is Island of the Blue Dolphins, which is not written by an Indigenous author. I feel it is important to amplify the voices of Indigenous peoples and allow them to tell their own stories. These books will help my students make connections between Indigenous communities and their daily lives.
I believe the voices of the Indigenous community should have more representation in the classroom, and we should no longer look to non-Indigenous people to learn about Indigenous culture.
