My Students

Have you ever been in a classroom in which you needed to write a report or create an oral presentation but didn't have the resources? That's the challenge facing our students.

Who are our students?

Our students are sixth, seventh and eighth graders eager to learn. They are creative and eager to learn. Some of them learn quickly while others take a bit longer to understand the key concepts. They're tall. They're not so tall. They're funny and full of energy. They say things that make you stop and think. Our students face all of the challenges that are out there today. Sometimes, they "hit a bump in the road" and seek out advice from a friend or trusted adult.

My Project

Our school is in the process of applying to become an IB school. We have many students who are high achievers and many students who have the potential to be high achievers. However, our classrooms (and library) is very dated. Therefore, when students want to conduct research for papers, oral presentations, etc., they aren't able to connect with much culturally diverse material. My students need books on Native American history and culture to enhance their celebration of Indian Summer. The items we are requesting will allow our students local access to material for classroom work, presentations, culture fairs, oral reports, etc.

I chose this project for a number of reasons: 1) As a school counselor, teaching students about cultural diversity has always been important to me.

2) As a Native American, we typically are under-represented in schools (less than 1%), and it's important for students to be aware of cultures other than their own. 3) As a person, I feel it's important for children to understand not only their place in the world, but to understand perspectives of other persons.
