India Rising: From Colonization to Independence and Democracy
My students need 28 new titles about India, including Contemporary India: The Basics, Mahatma Gandhi: Fighting for Indian Independence, and An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India.
Our school library strives to meet the needs and interests of our student body--a melting pot of ethnicity, culture, language, academic level, orientation, economic status--by providing students with books they can relate to or that move them.
As a semi-urban school in the outskirts of a major metropolitan area in Washington State, we reflect a microcosm of the world around us.
We have a high poverty rate with around 60% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Represented are more than a dozen languages and cultures, from Somalia to Mexico, Albania to Vietnam, we welcome immigrants and "locals" alike. The diversity in cultures is matched by our diverse academic needs ranging from IB diploma seekers to those who need support with reading, math or science.
My Project
Understanding the struggles of those in the past can guide the struggles of the present. India's fight for independence from British rule from the 19th to mid-20th century, and its striving for democracy and social change afterward, can teach us about resistance and persistence in the face of subjugation and injustice. Yet, our library has an embarrassing lack of relevant books on India and key sub-topics.
My intent is to provide a variety of materials that cover particular points of India's history during the past 300 years that have shaped this nation into its contemporary form.
These include British colonization and rulership under the Raj, Gandhi and the fight for Indian independence, and finally, its contemporary struggles with partition, attempts at eliminating its caste system and its striving for democracy.
Since I've had students request such materials in the past, I am certain that they will be accessed and used, particularly by our IB students who often independently explore global issues such as colonization, empire, political independence and social and political movements. These books would add a much needed perspective on these topics.
