Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of our students come to school without stability at home. They first need to feel loved and have structure before they can be taught to learn academically.
These students come to school hungry daily.
Our students receive free breakfast, free lunch and a free snack daily, with the hopes that they will receive a healthy dinner at home every night. Many of them come to school tired because they aren't receiving a proper routine of sleep and nourishment at home.
My students are amazing children with potential beyond even their ability to comprehend. They are bright, innovative learners who are sponges at this point in their lives. First Grade is the perfect place to build the foundation they need to burst into learning in subsequent grades. I am so proud of their choices to come to school and soak it all in even among the trials of the less than appropriate daily living atmosphere they have at home.
My Project
My students need more time reading independently so that they can practice the different strategies I’ve taught them in small group. Many of them do not have a library of books at home. They read the books that we have at school. I have a small library, but It is not large enough for each of them to have several books to choose from.
These students depend on my leveled reading library for exciting books to read.
I am a newer teacher and am still trying to build this library. Please help me entice them to learn to love reading independently, at their level, with this new leveled library.
