My students need quality literature (Harry Potter Paperback Box Set, J.R.R. Tolkien 4-Book Boxed Set) magazines (DynaMath), and listening center materials to use during independent literacy time.
Dr. Seuss said, " The more that you read, the more thinks you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Reading will help open the door to new learning, self-confidence, an opportunities for my students!
Our school is located in urban Colorado.
The majority of our students are minorities and we have a 97% free and reduced lunch rate. Most students are significantly below grade level and without access to quality literature outside of my small classroom library. Too commonly, students do not have books at home.
I am requesting quality literature sets mainly geared for boys (The Kane Chronicles, Harry Potter, etc.), audio books and audio book sets for listening centers to give struggling readers access to grade-level books, and a math magazine subscription. I also need a white-board to use for small-group teaching. We will use these materials during independent literacy time. Students will be engaged in practicing independently, will develop a love of reading, and will improve their reading skills.
With the increase of video and computer games, too many students enter 5th grade without ever having finished an entire novel.
These new books will help students be excited about reading. Those students who only like math will enjoy reading about the subject. Having these materials in our classroom library will help my students to grow in their reading abilities and develop an interest in reading by having a variety of resources to choose from and explore.
