My Students

My students are entering this school year with a unique set of academic, social, and emotional needs compared to years past. They have spent more than a full academic calendar with an educational experience facilitated exclusively by screens. Many have not stepped foot in a physical classroom since March of 2020. Some will be eager to connect with others in person and ready to be challenged in their reading and writing development. Others will need time to get comfortable again in a learning space that isn’t their bedroom.

Not only do they have diverse backgrounds, but they have also had a wide array of personal and familial stresses in the last year.

Some had to make school a lower priority because they were taking care of young siblings or sick relatives or even working a full-time job to financially support their families.

While this year will be yet another “unprecedented time” for them, some things have not changed. They are still young people who deserve literature that can be mirrors and windows for their lives as they hope to better understand themselves and their world. It’s a world in which perspective-taking, critical thinking, and healthy communication are as valuable as ever.

My Project

Thanks to additional, generous donations from family and friends for previously-funded projects, I am excited to offer students in my classroom a new set of recently-released texts that will appeal to reluctant readers and reflect a diverse group of authors and backgrounds.

So far, this school year has shown that students are excited to take a break from screens and interact once more with the printed word, but they need engaging texts that will challenge and inspire them to keep reading!

These books were chosen using credible recommended book lists including the one released by the National Council of Teachers of English: Best Books of the 2020-2021 School Year.
