Independent Reading Books: Building Lifelong Readers!
My students need book selections for independent reading in the classroom. 5 of each book is needed in order to create Book Clubs for independent reading discussion.
My ninth grade students are always spectacular young people. At times they can have a bit of an identity crisis, as they are high school students in a middle school building. However, within the first few months of ninth grade they take on the leadership role in the building and serve as role models for the seventh and eighth grade students.
My ninth grade English students are hardworking, and strive to make their first year of high school a success.
They allow me to push them beyond their normal limits in the classroom, and I find them getting excited about literature as well as independent reading. It is my hope to continue to promote this growth and create lifelong readers.
My Project
Donations to this project will immensely change my students' views of reading. As an English teacher, my goal is to promote a love of reading in my students; however, that is not possible by sticking strictly to curriculum reading.
Students need to read books that intrigue them, and the only way they can do this is by being offered a large selection of titles across all genres.
Using these requested books, plus 14 other titles I have already purchased on my own, I would be creating a classroom library for the purpose of independent reading. Students will be placed in groups of 3-5 based upon the title they want to read, and will meet weekly to set reading goals and discuss their reading.
During this time I will also have conferences with the students (as based on Penny Kittle's teaching in "Book Love") to learn what they like, dislike and struggle with while reading. This will help build their reading stamina, help them learn who they are as readers, as well as promote lifelong reading in their personal lives outside of school.
