My students are second graders who live in the north part of our city. They are a diverse group of students from a variety of cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds! They are excited to be back in the classroom and are excited to learn! 2nd grade standards can also prove to be challenging when they have been out of the classroom for over a year, due to the pandemic. Yet, they don't give up!
The more successful they feel, the more motivated they are to work hard to continue learning.
With the right supports, they have eagerly reported to me that they know they are smart. When things are hard, they chant along with me: "We've got grit, we don't quit!"
My students have been doing a great job of taking ownership over their literacy bags while I am reading with small groups. The only challenge has been that since we have added helpful tools such as timers and reading phones, the bags don't stay in the tubs we have. Every day, tubs and bags are falling all over the floor when the students put them away.
A storage rack would allow the students to hang their bags on something sturdy and organized, so they can find their bag and put it away with ease.
This will help our clean-up go smoothly, and help students access their bag quickly to make the most efficient use of our learning time. Additionally, it would be helpful to have a reading phone for every student to have in their bag. Currently, we do not have enough for each student, but these will help motivate the students to make sure they read their decodable book every day, giving them the practice they need to become fluent readers.
