My students need access to tablets to further their independence in individual activities in the classroom. Tablets are easy for kindergarten students to navigate independently. Using them at any time to work on a skill.
I work in an intercity school in Cleveland, Ohio. Many of my students come to me without preschool experience and leave me as beginning readers ready for first grade.
It is not uncommon for my students to come into my classroom unable to identify the letters of the alphabet or the sounds those letters make.
At the end of the school year these same students are reading CVC words and are beginning to read leveled readers. These same students are able to take the letter sounds and begin to write phonetically.
My Project
In my classroom my students have access to eight laptop computers. That being said these laptops are not always developmentally appropriate for my students. At the beginning of the school year my students take the MAP test, a computer based test to see their level in both math and language arts. I have found that in August we are sometimes testing my students mouse and computer skills vs their actually knowledge in both langauge arts and math. Have a touch screen will be a way to make this assessment more valid for my students.
In kindergarten aside from teaching the basics of reading, writing and math, we also focus on teaching students responsibility and independence.
At the beginning of the school year, my student are unable to independently take out a computer, sign in, plug in their headphones and mouse, find the website and get to work. This something we work on throughout the year but valuable learning time is not taken advantage of with technology at the beginning of the school year because of this.
