Each year children in my class get to experience the joy of watching quail hatch and grow. For almost all students, this is the first time they have ever seen eggs hatch. We study the life cycle, chart growth, and wait expectantly for the hatching.
We have a class of 24 kindergarteners in a semi-rural school in Northern California.
We are a K-2 school. Our main sub-group is economically disadvantaged students. We have most of the supplies we need for daily learning, but not much left to replace out of date equipment.
My Project
Students will learn about what goes on inside a quail egg. They will chart growth, record in their science journals, and keep a calendar to count down the days until hatching. They also learn about what these birds will need after they hatch, and help prepare the environment for them.
The hatching is the exciting culmination of all their hard work. Having the quail hatch and grow in our room adds an extra warmth and coziness to our classroom. The students and their families watch the hatching, growth and changes in these tiny birds with avid interest.
We have been hatching eggs for the past 17 years, and in the last few years it has become nerve-wracking with our finicky, outdated equipment ( a 20+ year old still-air model, with only a small area for viewing the hatching).
The incubator I am requesting is high quality and up-to-date. Best of all for the children, it allows many students to view the hatching process at once. No longer will they have to wait in line, in hopes of catching a glimpse of a hatching egg.
