My Students

I have 20 energetic 2nd graders who love to work hard. We are located in a small town in North Carolina. Our school is a Title 1 school with 99% of the children receiving free/reduced lunch. Many of my students are from situations that are unstable. They often come to school for the stability of our classroom. In spite of this, they are excited and eager to learn. Each student represents various home backgrounds and life experiences with a broad level of ability and development.

My Project

My students need a Rekenrek to help assist and advance their mathematics knowledge. I am asking for a classroom set of Rekenreks. A Rekenrek is similar to the design of an Abacus. This version has 10 rows of 10 beads which totals 100 beads. Each row is made of 5 red beads and 5 white beads.

A Rekenrek is designed to support learners with a visual and kinesthetic model in order to create a strong mathematical foundation.

The Rekenrek creates number relationships, addition and subtraction strategies, doubles plus or minus one, making tens and the automaticity of base 10 facts. With my students using a class set of Rekenreks, they will be able to compose and decompose numbers up to 100.

The need for this tool will help support the math curriculum by developing multiple math strategies as well as providing the strategies as a concrete tool that will last for many years.
