This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
While our school is located in the historic Corn Hill area of Rochester, our students come from all over Rochester. Many of them come from poverty stricken neighborhoods. We also have several English language learners.
Our school serves students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade and has a focus on STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math.
100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. We are also a school with an "extended learning day" which means our school day is an hour longer than a normal school day. The extended learning period gives restorative practices, builds relationships, and academic intervention.
My Project
We are nearing the end of the year and we will begin reviewing for the algebra regents exam. My students are doing what a lot of people thought students in my district couldn't do. They are taking high school regents algebra as 7th and 8th graders. Every year, for a few days leading up to the regents exam, the living environment teacher and I like to have a "celebration" with all of our honors students. We spend most of the time reviewing as a large group, but we like to have a little fun to ease some of the anxiety that comes along with important exams.
We always like to incorporate a little competition in our review sessions.
Of course, with competition, students like rewards. We also want to let our kids know that we are proud of what they are doing and how hard they have worked all year to come this far.
Emojis are very popular with my middle school students, and I am requesting items that my students will be excited to earn, including emoji party favors, emoji backpacks, and an emoji pillow. My students also love having their own stress ball or fidget toy, and rubiks cubes are finally cool again in middle school. We also have a school incentive store where students can earn what we call "eagle bucks" and purchase items. The most popular items are pencils and headphones, so I know students will be excited to win these. My students are already self-motivated learners, but the items requested in this project will make them that much more excited.
