Increasing Working Memory: A Multi-Sensory Approach

My students need under the desk bikes to promote movement and increase focus. Other items either increase positive stimuli such as sounds or light, or decrease negative stimuli such as distracting noises.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This project is for a co-taught math classroom for 7th and 8th graders. Students with disabilities learn in general education in our fully inclusive classroom, and all students engage in personalized learning to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. Our school has a diverse Latino population, and most students are bilingual in English and Spanish. To accommodate students with disabilities and English language learners, this classroom takes a multi-sensory approach to learning including hands-on activities, visuals, and context-based learning. One major indicator of academic success is working memory.

These students are motivated, driven, and have sensory needs often relating to ADHD or a learning disability.

Researchers have found that students with ADHD perform better academically when given the opportunity to move while working. By having movement, a student's working memory is freed to focus on the lesson at hand.

Students with learning disabilities may also need to free up space in their working memory, with the overall goal of retaining more information. For some students, this may be good smells, silent time, or sensory objects during lessons.

My Project

Researchers have proven that one of the greatest indicators for academic success is working memory-impacted by ADHD and learning disabilities. In order to promote focus and attention during personalized learning, students need to have full access to their working memory.

These materials allow some wiggly students to move, shake, and listen to a lesson without having to waste brain power by telling themselves to sit still.

Students who are distracted by sound or movement can enjoy a calming sensory experience by draping a weighted blanket over their lap, putting on noise canceling headphones or enjoying the calming ocean lights projected on the wall.

The goal of learning in our classroom is to connect to the material while reaching CCSS standards, something that is the most possible when students have sensory needs met. Your gift would allow students with ADHD, learning disabilities, and Autism to focus on lessons in a positive and focused manner.
