Increasing Understanding and Empathy Through Stories
My students need sets of guided reading books that tell the journey of refugees from different countries to build their knowledge and empathy of others.
My 6th graders are creative, intelligent, generous and out-going. They come to school eager to learn each and every day. No matter what Language Arts or Global Studies context we are working on, the students always give it their best.
My students are change-makers of the future with their creativity, willingness to help others, and out of the box thinking skills.
Every student has a story that goes beyond school hours. I am lucky that many of my students trust me with their stories - the positive, the sad, the unsure. Their willingness to share and learn makes our classroom a community. I feel extremely lucky to be their teacher because I know I have a room full of students with the ability the change the world.
My Project
Our 6th grade Math and Global Studies teachers have teamed up to teach an International Baccalaureate unit on the global need for affordable housing for refugees. My students are caring and kind. They already possess the desire to help others but we need books that can build our understanding of a refugee's journey. Each of these books will take the students on a different journey from a different country.
By having books that explain a refugee's journey from different countries my 6th graders will have increased awareness, empathy, and desire to tackle the need for housing.
The books requested have countries that students may or may not have heard of prior to reading. We will be able to not only gain a deep understanding of why refugees seek safety in other countries but will find connections between the stories and their paths. Some of my students will make connections to their own family's history. I know that my students will engage in deep, meaningful conversations around each book. They will fill in a missing piece from our Global Studies library currently. Thank you for considering our project!
