My school is a community school located in an urban area of Knoxville, Tennessee. The students come from diverse backgrounds and each have their own story. Many of my students spend the majority of their day at our school whether it be at an after school club or tutoring. Which is why the staff and myself work extra hard to make our school a place where students want to be. We strive to make our students feel welcomed, safe, loved, and cared for. My first graders love to learn through playing interactive games, using manipulatives, and technology whenever possible.
My Project
The requested materials will help me to increase student engagement in my first grade classroom. Many of the requested items will be used in our every day centers. The magnetic letters, cookie sheets, and organizer will allow me to create a hands on word building center. This would allow my students to build and manipulate words on their cookie sheet in an organized manner that leads them to success. The colored dominoes will be used in our math centers to allow students to replicate numbers and build addition number sentences.
Adding a disco ball into our classroom will give our class that little bit of MAGIC and motivation my first graders thrive on!
Our disco ball will be used to motivate my students to exceed their goals and expectations. Imagine being a first grader and being given a pretty tough problem. You may want to give up! But then your teacher tells you if 80% of the class gets the problem correct they'll hit the magic button. You'd no longer want to give up! You'd want to work as hard as you can through the problem to help your classmates get to hit the MAGIC button. That magic button would activate our disco ball and give our class a few minutes to celebrate our achievement.
