My students need mobile storage cart with book bins to have an organized leveled classroom library. They also desperately need a rug to sit on to read.
I am a Kindergarten teacher in one of the largest, most diverse, counties in Georiga. As a kindergarten teacher, along with my three colleagues, we take on the great responsibility to teach all children to read and write.
Through research, we have found that reading books every day is the only activity that reliably relates to proficiency in reading.
Voluminous reading has been proven to be an effective intervention for struggling readers as well as the most effective test preparation for all students (Allington & Gabriel, 2012). We are committed to providing each student with the materials needed to support their literacy lives. Access to books and time to read can even lessen the effects of poverty on literacy development (Krashen, 2011).
My Project
The reading cart is specially designed for teachers to level their classroom library. The cart stores and organizes 16 book bins and easily transports them anywhere in the school! This will be ideal for literacy centers and to share books with other Kindergarten classrooms. The book checkout chart will teach students the how-to of taking a book and putting a book away. The classroom rug is a necessity for any Kindergarten classroom and I am not able to purchase one on my own.
The book cart and reading carpet will give children choice in what they read and where they read as well as the opportunity to read books on their independent level they can practice again and again.
