Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach reading to 120 seventh grade students in an inner city school. We have a high percentage of free and reduced lunches.
As I try to teach students that reading involves thinking about the text, I ask them to keep tracks of their "inner conversations." Students get tired of writing with pencils and paper.
One motivational technique is to use dry erase markers and slates. Many students do not have these writing supplies at home so it is fun to use them at school. When I am doing a large group presentation or a small reading group, students can simply write their questions, predictions, and connections on slates and hold them up in the air. This technique allows me to quickly scan the answers for understanding of the concept. Everyone has a voice.
In addition, an important reading strategy is to visualize a scene from the reading passage. Students love to use colorful markers so that they can display their imaginative interpretations. Some of the Latino students whose English is still weaker can excel in their drawing responses.
Unfortunately, dry erase markers run out fast, and they are expensive. Students finally willing to write responses get quickly frustrated when yet another marker doesn't work. Erasers wear out.
With your kind contribution, you will add to the enjoyment of seventh graders (remember that energy?)as they respond more actively to their reading.
Thank you so much for considering this proposal.
