Increasing Literacy in Science

My students need updated resources to increase their literacy in the science classroom.

My Students

These magazines use current up to date information and hot topics to engage their readers. My students will be able to read about science without using our out of date text books.

My students are from an urban area in MD.

I teach middle school students in a self contained classroom. Most of them do not have access at home to current science problems and resources. They attend a K-8 elementary/middle school with city wide option for the middle school. The school is diverse.

My Project

I am requesting science magazines(Science World and SuperScience) to incorporate literacy into my classroom. I would like to use these magazines to engage my students in current science topics and debates. These magazines come with resources that are aligned with the common core standards. I can use these magazines to apply cross curricular concepts into my science classroom. They are easy to read and have my students interest. They are much more useful than the out of date textbooks that I have to use.

This project is so important because it is hard to get my students to read.

These magazines give them factual nonfiction text to read in a non threatening manner with pictures and activities to go along with it. Using magazines like this in the past, my students have been able to increase their reading fluency.
