Take a walk through our hallways and you'll hear students speaking English, Spanish, Korean, Sudanese, Arabic, and just about any language you can think of. Over 40 languages are spoken at our school.
Many of our 7th and 8th graders are refugees and are learning the ins and outs of a whole new culture while still learning the concepts of their curriculum.
They come from all different backgrounds. Each brings their own story to our school culture, and for many of them, the discoveries and excitement of learning is a novel experience.
My Project
Our school is quite unique for our area. We have a high population of refugee families and many of these children have witnessed traumatic events. One result of this is that they tend to react differently to situations than other students, often with violence or blatant disrespect. Although we have tried many interventions, we still are not reaching all of our students who need help, so we are developing a health and mindfulness curriculum in the hopes that we can reach more of them.
Studies have shown that students who engage in strenuous aerobic exercise at the beginning of the day are more engaged in class and perform better on assessments.
Our program combines aerobic exercise with the concept of mindfulness, assisting students in becoming more aware of what is going on inside themselves. The heart rate monitors will help us ensure that students maintain an optimum heart rate while they exercise.
