Increasing Global And National Awareness Through Magazines

My students need 20 subscriptions to Weekly Reader and Time for Kids magazines.

As a fourth grade teacher in inner-city New York, I've loved being a part of my students' enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. They are at an age when they are beginning to really look at the world outside of their own community. Instead of just wanting to know and talk about NYC, they are asking questions about U.S. politics and the election, the war in Iraq, the children in New Orleans, etc. While I love talking to them and answering their questions, I want to foster in them the ability to obtain information and knowledge from resources other than me. "Time for Kids" and "Weekly Reader" are two magazines that I believe will fulfill this need. "Time for Kids" has a very current events and political focus, while "Weekly Reader" centers more on things that affect the students more intimately. Together, these two magazines would be an excellent addition to my classroom. These magazines would be used as both options for independent reading and as reading center pieces with direct focuses. I am confidant that with your donation, you can help to provide the students with a well-rounded exposure to the world outside of Brooklyn. Thank you.
