My students need Scholastic News and Time for Kids to help with comprehension. Having articles in color also helps with their attention span. The Scholastic magazines have been proven to increase student fluency as well as improving comprehension skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students are Exceptional Student Education and require varying degrees of accommodations. These include students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a third grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 90% of our students are African American or Latino.
All of my students are struggling readers, reading on the 2nd and 3rd grade level.
They come from low income families, and require love and attention. When they walk into my door, my focus is on being present to them for the 60 minutes they are there. Using creative and engaging texts helps them become interested in the world outside their boundaries. It is my job to have all my students leave 6th grade more confident as a reader.
My Project
Reading articles with real world connections helps increase student comprehension skills as well as their fluency. Continuing to use the same material can become boring and lack engagement. Full color magazines like Scholastic News and Time bring the outside world or rather the universe right to the classroom.
Sponsoring this project will give my students the means by which they can increase their comprehension skills as well as be connected to the real world.
Benefits to this project go beyond a reading class, but connects to all other subject areas, as the articles in these magazines cover many different subjects.
