Increasing Engagement While Meeting Student Fidget Needs
My students need stools and seating discs that will help with limiting their fidgeting so they can focus on learning and being engaged in classroom activities.
My students walk into our room every day eager to learn and to tell me all of their stories. Since I've worked hard to build a classroom community, I allow them to share their stories with me, and I respond to them, continuing to build that important relationship with them. I may be the most stable things in their little lives. I always tell them I can't wait to see how much they learn and grow not only this year but in their lives. I make a big deal out of going to college even though the majority of them are below grade level. I want my students to believe that they are capable of learning and believe in themselves each day perhaps a little more than the day before.
I teach in a Title I school in a low income/high poverty district where at least 60% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Despite the hard lives my students have at home, they are always willing to work hard, learn a lot and try their best. My students often tell me that want to be at school to learn a lot.
My Project
My fantastic 3rd graders are so excited to learn but are also full of energy! Many of them have a hard time staying focused, on task and engaged in every activity in the classroom. They are always up walking around the classroom.
I would like to further support my 3rd graders by providing them with materials that will help them fidget while staying engaged in their work so they aren't up around the room and distracted.
The wobble stools will work great for small group lessons at the Kidney table. They work with me in small groups for 40 minutes in the morning on their day and 30 minutes in the afternoon on their day as well as at various times during the day when they need extra support. The seating discs will be great for their chairs at their desk. It will provide my most active students with the sensory support they crave during the day.
With these supplies, my students will be come even further in their learning the rest of the year.
